After more than 25 years of Merlot cultivation at Vignamaggio, the estate decided to dedicate a Cru to it, an expression of the best vineyard, Santa Maria at Petriolo, close to the villa.

FROM THE VINE TO THE CELLAR

Santa Maria a Petriolo is a vineyard at 340 meters on the sea level, characterised by the geological formation «Macigno Sandstone». It is predominantly West facing and it extends on 4,5 hectares,  producing elegant wines endowed with finesse and lively tannins.

Adjacent to the highest area of the historical nucleus of the farm, on a slightly concave plateau with soils that are a blend of those typical of the area of Lamole and those in the valley with a richer clay component.

Vignamaggio Wine Merlot

For 25 years The “Santa Maria” vineyard has been producing the Merlot grapes that we selected for our new single varietal wine. The age of this vineyard endows this wine with complexity and elegant tannins giving it excellent longevity potential.

Merlot di Santa Maria is aged for about 20 months in French oak barriques, some new and some used, and then in bottles for 6 months.

THE WINE

The Merlot di Santa Maria blends the fruity notes of the varietal with the characteristic elegance and freshness of Vignamaggio and the Greve territory.

It has a bright ruby colour with a dark tone, on the nose, it is intense, with notes of blueberry and liquorice. In the mounth, it is full but not dominant: the tannins are soft and sweet, the finish spicy.

FOOD PAIRING SUGGESTIONS: fresh stuffed pasta, pasta with meat sauces, aged cheeses, grilled meat.
